  • 1. HOW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY HELPED MY PRODUCTION GROUP COMMUNICATE THROUGHOUT THE COURSEWORK PROCESS RORY MCNAMEE
  • 2. TECHNOLOGY IN COMMUNICATION  As a group project, the success our media coursework through AS to A2 would hinge massively on our ability to communicate and work together effectively so we can all achieve the best results Communicating outside of lessons would prove crucial to our coursework as we were aware immediately that planning in lessons alone wouldn't be enough, so as a result we created a group chat on Facebook messenger.  As well as our coursework products on the whole, our group dynamic benefitted hugely from such digital technologies and this presentation explores each piece of digital technology and how it helped in our communication as a group.
  • 3. FACEBOOK MESSENGER  As previously mentioned, creating a group chat was one of the first things we did and almost exclusively used messenger to communicate throughout the process. Messenger provided us with a simple way of ensuring we're all on track, sharing ideas and plan documents, voicing concerns and crucially organising shoot dates.  We chose messenger as our platform due to the popularity of the app among us as a group and people around our age as we began considering casting our actors - we ultimately decided to create a second group chat with our final actors, Alex (Dt. Wells) and Catrina (Vanessa Warren) so to not muddle final dates with other coursework planning or make it difficult to find important messages when looking back.
  • 4. FACEBOOK MESSENGER  The examples here display the interpersonal creativity that we aimed to maintain all year, messenger helped us all stay on task and appreciate eachother’s perspectives from organisational issues to technical or creative concerns we may have. Messenger provided a single workspace for us to share work that could have otherwise been kept in a hectic paper folder, had this software not been available.  Also, as sound editor I was able to utilise the voice recording feature in messenger to receive sound bites from Alex and avoid having to reschedule another additional shoot for our draft as seen in the image below. This saved time and unnecessary effort from our volunteering actors.
  • 5. DROPBOX / GOOGLE DRIVE  These 2 personal cloud storage services proved crucial in our groups functioning by sharing files between us at different stages of the process. Due to the sizeable percentage of work we had to do outside of class, software proved to be much more significant than hardware in our communication as a group in every way, in this case providing us with an alternative to external storage devices like USB's and DSLR memory cards.
  • 6. DROPBOX  Firstly Dropbox was predominantly used for sharing Word documents in the planning process, like location recces, risk assessments and scripts as well as saving and attaching post formats like PowerPoints and SlideShares in the research phase too. These cloud storage services gave us insurance that our work would not be lost if a single device was broken or lost and acted as a pool of collective intelligence where our resources could be shared and skills combined.
  • 7. GOOGLE DRIVE  Google Drive was more significant in the construction phase as we submitted our coursework drafts. This linked to our communication as it, similarly to Dropbox, allowed us to upload important files to the same place that we can all access rather than a single storage device. This drive was particularly important in draft phases where updates on our construction products can be uploaded for the group to analyse an suggest improvements.
  • 8. CONCLUSION  Overall, our groups functioning and ultimate success in creating the 3 products can be attributed to our consistent use of digital technology to organise, motivate and generally keep track of the multitude of tasks both individual and collective throughout the year. The examples shown helped massively this year in our communication and while it wasn’t without complications, the quality of our coursework would have greatly suffered without it.
